On the impact of tool material and lubrication in ball end milling of ceramic foams

Abstract. High porosity materials, such as ceramic foams, can be used for several applications spanning from thermal insulators, biomedical implants, molten metal filters, and others. The general practice is to adjust the shape of those foams in a pre-sintering stage obtain complex shapes. This work aims investigate workability post-sintering condition an alternative way overcome premature product failure during production inhomogeneous shrinkage sintering. An experimental campaign ball end milling alumina-based sintered state was carried out herein. Two different tool materials (aluminum oxide-based, diamond-coated) have been tested using two levels spindle speed under minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) flood regimes. most important findings are: (i) influence lubricant more pronounced analyzing wear, but it has smaller effect on surface characteristics workpiece, (ii) higher improves workpiece quality diamond coated tools are best available choice terms both wear quality.
